CASTING / FISHING METHODS / TUITION DAY AT CHIRK FISHERY ON THE 24TH APRIL 2010, ( £25 FOR THE DAY INCLUDING FISHING PERMIT AND A LIGHT LUNCH. 10AM TO 4PM. PLEASE BOOK BY E MAIL.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT FOR TUITION IN HOW TO CAST A FLY EFICIENTLY ?
The answer to the question is folded in many ways to make the package of delivery of the fly or bait to the quarry in a presentable manner that will enhance your chance of a hook up, which is what you are trying to achieve.
Let us look at the ‘ROLL CAST’ a simple basic movement of the rod on a straight path within a narrow arc bending the rod against the weight of the line and it’s anchor on the water to a stop allowing the rod tip to initially bend and straighten at the stop to propel the line in the direction you require it to travel.
WHY DO I NEED FLY CASTING TUITION / INSTRUCTION TO DO THAT ?
Simple, you may if you have not had Tuition / Instruction in Casting NOT be getting optimum use out of your fishing rod / line / set up, your Instructor / Tutor will evaluate your actions and assist you to enhance your ability.
I JUST CAST OVERHEAD I NEVER USE THE ROLL CAST, WHY SHOULD I ?
The Roll Cast is used for several reasons.
To straighten the line out initially preceding another cast.
When the terrain you are in does not offer itself to any other type of cast.
To raise a sunken fly to the surface preceding a delivery cast
If you are boat fishing and retrieving the fly close in with your arm raised dibbling the fly in the surface it is a way in which you can set the hook in the event of a take alongside the boat.
The Roll Cast forms an integral part of all the ‘Spey Casts’
LET ME ASK YOU A QUESTION NOW.
DO YOU NOT THINK THAT A FEW HOURS TUITION WILL NOT ENHANCE YOUR FISHING STYLE AND EFICIENCY / MAKE IT EASIER FOR YOU TO ACHIEVE DISTANCE / CAST THE FLY IN THE RIGHT PLACE IN AWKWARD LOCATIONS ?
I the answer is in the affirmative , even a ‘possibly’, Let me assess your style / method and enhance this for you.
There are no secrets the rod only works in one way and Fly Casting Tuition / Instruction will show you this.
From the Roll Cast I can take you through to the JUMP ROLL / JUMP ROLL WITH A SHOOT OF LINE / SNAKE ROLL 90% CHANGE OF DIRECTION, SINGLE SPEY CAST / DOUBLE SPEY CAST / SNAP ‘C’ CAST (DOUBLE AND SINGLE HANDED ROD) AND THROUGH TO HAULING / SINGLE HAUL / DOUBLE HAUL / SLACK LINE CASTS / REACH CAST / REACH MEND CAST / PARACHUTE CAST / SQUIGLE CAST WITH THE SINGLE HANDED ROD.
This achieved will put you in good stead for any situation you are likely to encounter in a fishing situation.
WHAT IS A SINGLE SPEY CAST THEN?
Simply it is a 'jump roll' with a change of direction, lift, sweep, anchor, (tap) forward (with a single handed rod) (Pull the bottom hand into the body with the a double handed rod) to bend the rod against the weight of the 'D' loop in the line and anchor point in a tight arc and away it flies with a neat narrow loop.
I'M FINDING DIFFICULTY IN CHANGING DIRECTION WHAT DO I DO ?
Stand facing your target area, on the lift and sweep create a narrow half moon type angle out and in off an imaginary straight tracking line in the travel of the rod tip on as level a plane as you can achieve to place the anchor point a rod and a half length away level with your body the 'D' loop forming in the opposite drection to which you want to cast in. A brief stop will allow the 'D' loop to anchor and form. Before it collapses stroke the rod forward in a narrow arc and on an even tracking (Straight path of the rod tip) to a distinct stop, this allows the bend created in the rod by the weight of the line and the anchor point to recover and propel the line in the direction you wish it to go. Timing and technique is the key, put the rod to good use against the weight / as against the use of excessive power. Practice / Practice / Practice!! see a qualified Game Angling Instructors Association Tutor / Coach / Instructor to fine tune, he will soon pick out any faults and explain how to overcome them. I regard the single Spey as the most difficult to grasp of all the 'Spey Casts'
'MY CASTS ARE ALL OVER THE PLACE I CAN'T SEEM TO GET A STRAIGHT LINE OUT,WHAT AM I DOING WRONG ?'
It could be a number of reasons but this may help you to understand the importance of keeping the rod hand movements small and on straight paths in whichever direction you wish the line to travel in. Hold the rod in the hand with your thumb on the top of the cork handle pointing towards the tip of the rod. Whatever you do with your thumb the rod tip will follow that action and subsequently the line will follow the action imparted into the rod tip. Look down at your thumb and with a slight wrist break on a horizontal plane 1/2" to the right and 1/2" to the left, keep moving the rod from side to side watching your thumb .... ok ....keep it going and then look at the rod tip and view that the rod tip will be moving over a space of 6" to 9", an exageration of the movement of the thumb. Think about this one now, if 1/2" movement gives 6" to 9" movement at the rod tip say 9' away, what will this movement give you at 15 yards, the end of the line ? a lot more, yes, so bring your eyes back to your thumb and grip on the rod handle. 1/2" wrong there spells disaster at the end of the line and that is in any direction that the thumb is taken off a desired straight path movement. So in essence whatever is wrong with your cast it starts off with the way in which you move the rod handle, watch your thumb throughout your casting action and keep it on a straight path with no wrist break in the actual loading and presentation of your cast and it will give you an indication of what is wrong. Straight paths only!
So you get your casting to a standard where you think that it is 'right' or good enough for you without tuition or instruction from a professional casting tuition Coach /Instructor / so be it there's no problem, but, where professional casting tuition comes in is to enhance you at that level. I personally ask all my clients to do what they normally do in casting and take a look at them / their actions with the rod from a distance, be it single or double handed casting and also from various angles. Within this I am able to assess each movement you make within the cast and through a simple process of explanation am able to eliminate the faults and enhance your casting.
Seek out a professional from the Game Angling Instructors Association there will be one in your area that can help you enhance your casting. By enhancing your casting style it will lead to you being able to present the offering easier and better and this will enhance your fishing.

'HERE IS WHAT HE HAD TO SAY'
I’d just like to thank-you for yesterday’s fishing tuition.
I thoroughly enjoyed the morning and I am extremely grateful for the immense patience that you showed me.I was so ‘fired-up’ I spent a further two hours in the afternoon (my wife had to drag me away from the water’s edge to get me back for my meeting!) practising the wisdom that you passed. I can report that a lot of what you taught me must have sunk-in because I had three or four bites and caught two more trout.
I look forward to arranging the next lesson.
Many thanks again.
Ian.
You are welcome Ian and very well done you! I was and am impressed by your progress.
