G.H. ‘Small Water Fisheries Programme’

In the height of Summer, early morning and late evening is the best time on the ‘Small Water Fisheries’ unless you turn your attention and attempt to catch some of the ‘Cyprinids’.

In this programme ‘Gwilym Hughes’ takes you to ‘Dearnford Hall Trout Fishery’ and then onto ‘Chirk Trout Fishery’ for some action on the ‘Bloodworm’ and a very tiny ‘Shutlecock’ pattern.

The ‘Carp’ and ‘Tench’ although active on the surface at ‘Dearnford’ proved a hard quarry to conquer but ‘Rainbow Trout’, ‘Golden Rudd’ and ‘Rudd’, obliged , also the aquatic richness of the water with ‘Karl Humphries’ the Fisheries Manager.

‘Tiger Trout’ and ‘Brown Trout’ came to the dry ‘Shuttlecock’ at ‘Chirk Trout Fishery’ An insight into the tying of the ‘Bloodworm’ and ‘Shuttlecock’ used by Gwilym, makes for varied and interesting viewing.

G.H. ‘River Brown Trout Fishing Programme’

This programme starts on ‘Wild Brown Trout’ from the River Ceiriog in North Wales It shows how to successfully approach low clear water conditions the tying of the flies used and set up of the ‘Double whammy’ (New Zealand) style with dry and nymph fished together, the programme continues on the River Vyrnwy in North Wales the approach with a Dry Fly to the weir pool and as this method fails in and around the margins the tactic and approach change to ‘Bugs’…….

The ‘Cul de Canon’ is tied without the aid of a vice and put to good use to finish the programme in the pool at the base of the Lake Vyrnwy dam and outlet where Gwilym picks out six truly ‘Wild Brownies’.

G.H. Brown Trout Boat Fishing

This programme starts at Lake Vyrnwy in Wales where the approach is with ‘Shuttlecocks’ for surface feeding Brown Trout, a change to Nymph Fishing and then back onto the ‘Shuttlecocks’ when the Nymphs fail. Lakle Vyrnwy is situated in a steep sided valley on a Granite base and the lake supports a healthy head of Wild Brown Trout supplemented with a sprinkle stocking programme of the same speices, exiting sight fishing as the paths of the feeding trout are intercepted. Moving on Gwilym Hughes travels to Holyhead and uses the fast ferry ‘Stenalink’ to Dunlaorhie and on to Lough Ennell in County Westmeath where he joins up with Christy Sleator to sample true short line wet fly tactics in the rolling wave at this very rich Limestone base lough which boast super quality wild Brown Trout.
