Update 3rd August 2009
David Jones and I paid a visit to this fabulous fishery today. Whilst the elements were not conducive to 'good fishing' we could not have not wished for a more wonderful location. The scenery has to be the next place to heaven. David also caught a very fine trout on a Dry Bibio.
Update 28th July 2009
A mixed bag of weather proved to be the key in a busy month at Tal y Llyn. Overcast days with wind are every anglers dream conditions, and for those who took to the waters they were justly rewarded . Floating lines teamed up with both wets and dries were effective along with small lures and wets fished on an intermediate line also did well.
Mr Kevin Primer and fellow members of the British Float Tubing Association held a small low key comp here and a good day was had by all, the eventual winner was young tuber Simon Cole. The tubers caught over 25 fish between them most of which were returned. Mr B Tandy caught 12 fish up to 2lb 8oz mainly on olives Mr Steve Watts caught 7 fish up to 2lb on a Montana Nymph. Clive Robinson took 5fish up to 2lb 8oz on Sooty Olives and Dabblers. Mr P Wood and Jamie Bell had 13 fish up to 1lb 12oz on Dabblers and Olives. Mr Graham Bell had 10 fish to 2lb on Olives.
August should be an exciting month with plenty of fly life such as Ants,Sedges,Heather fly ,and Daddy longlegs present. The River Dysyni has been runn ing high this month and this has helped the sea trout into the lake approx 20 have been caught to date, with 6 Brown trout 2 Seatrout and 1 Salmon being the bag limit....surley this must be good value for money for the Angler.
Update 21st July 2009
On a stormy rainy day I ventured out on Tal y llyn today and pulled wets for a few hours, my reward was 2 stockies of approximately 1lb 8oz, 3 wild fish to 1lb 8oz and a major battle with a Seatrout which I estimate to be about 3 lb which eventually freed himself when the point fly got stuck in weed with the whole fly line out of the tip of the rod, the fish cascaded about the place and was completely out of control on my 9' 5#. To describe the fishing in a word, Mmmm! 'Awsome' and I will be back for more, swallows and swifts were working 'Sedges' all day long, but the heavy rain and approaching low pressure, did not help. Had a chat with 'Phil Wood' the new Fishery Manager , he seems to have the finger on the pulse and I wish him well for the future there, most of the weed is now cut away and long drifts are possible. Here are a few 'Pics' for you. One of the Wild Brownies.
On top of the wall surounding the Tyn y Cornel Hotel garden, are laid slates and carved into the surfaces are outlines of fish, just look at the dates of some of these.
Fishery report for Tal-y-Llyn July 2009 (to date)
Mr Allen caught 9 browns and 1 sea trout on Dabblers and Muddlers on a floating line.
Mr Steve Ball had 9 fish up to 4lb on Diawl Bach's and Crunchers, Mr Paul Machin caught 17 fish on his stay at Tal-y-Llyn on Bibio's, Dabblers, and Kate McClaren. Mr Chris Hyde caught 8 fish up to 1lb 12oz on a Bibio Muddler and wets , Mr Dick York caught 7 fish up to 1lb 8oz whilst float tubing.
The beginning of July saw cooler showery weather along with some heavy downpours which resulted spate conditions in all the feeder streams and triggered off a nice run of sea trout. lot of these were caught by anglers fishing the Nursery and Reed drifts, most were between 1lb 8oz and 2lb bracket and provided good sport on light trout tackle. Fish have been located just subsurface along the small bays and inlets, taking small flies pulled on a Intermediate line but when the wind has dropped fish are willing to take small dry's on a floating line. Next month dry fly fishing should be popular with falls of Red Ants, Heather flies and Daddy longlegs in abundance

Update 27th April 2009
Some changes again at Tal-y-Llyn, stocking has recommenced and some of the weed has been dredged out in the North End of the Lake, whilst there is still a lot of weed there, it is possible to fish it in parts.
Update 28th June 2008
There are some changes at Tal-y-Llyn this year, no stocking and catch and release. Chris and five of his friends, all beginners to fly fishing, decided on a day's tuition and guiding. After some casting tuition and a light lunch three boats set off in relatively windy and dour conditions. All were set up with a dry Coch-y-Bonddu Beetle. Five fish were caught and returned during the afternoon, with quite a few missed takes. Chris took to it well and fished hard , here he is with two of his three fish.
UPDATE 15TH JUNE 2007
Fished Tal-y-Llyn twice this week on Wednesday we had 16 to the boat all on Dry Coch-y-Bonddu Beetles. Today was out with clients who had a couple of fish each. The fish are in tip top condition, the best wild fish went to about 1lb 8 oz, best stocked fish 2lb. Well worth a visit.
This glacial Lake of just over 200 acres is set at the foot of Cader Idris, the scond highest mountain in Wales. It can be described as one of the most tranquil and stunning locations in Europe. The homely and friendly team at the hotel boasts superb quisine in an 'away from it all' setting. Add to this one of the most productive top of the water 'Brown Trout' sport on fly, both from the shore and boat and you have a package that is unique in more ways than one.
The season is April to September and it can fish well throughout the season given suitable conditions with fabulous hatches of 'Olive' in May and June bringing with them some phenomenal rises of trout. Come August and September, Salmon and Seatrout enter the lake via the River Dysynni and these also have been caught on fly from a drifting boat.
Just to prove the point, I visited the fishery on the 11th April and took two trout in quick succession off the bank, here they are.
