THE MAGIC OF GRAYLING FISHING IN THE SUMMER MONTHS
Update 1st September 2010
The 'Ladies' are looking up! Aaron Jones on holiday at Glanrafon experienced the Welsh Dee today, first time with a fly rod in his hand, and accounted for 8 Grayling on a Dry !
Here are a couple of them
Update 26th August 2010
David Oxendale did well today with a nymph infront of of a dry securing five fish in the 2lb bracket, this one had other ideas though, engulfing the indicator fly.
Update 10th August 2010
A simmilar kind of day to yesterday weather wise, although difficult fishing at times Bryan and Denise Oxberry accounted for 14 fish between them, some absolute cracking fish in great condition. The 'Rat' infront of a dry was responsible for them all appart from one which came to a Parachute Olive size 18, late on in the afternoon.
Update 9th August 2010
On a strange day of closeness / rain / bright sunshine and strong wind at times John Brittleton did well with five fish, three Grayling and two Brown Trout on Czech Nymphs.
Update 20th June 2010
The season is four days old and in awkward sunny conditions today the River Dee produced the goods, some decent Grayling to kick start the Summer Grayling Season proper. A group of six from the 'Bolton Fly Tyers' came and fished very well under extreemly difficult conditions, plenty of heat, not a cloud in the sky and some cold release water. Nymphs and Bugs did the damage but a couple were caught on the dry. Their total tally for the day were 19 Grayling and 2 Brownies. Here are some pics.
Update 3rd June 2010
Only two weeks to go now until we can legally pursue the 'Lady of the Stream'. Whilst targeting trout a few out of season Grayling have come to hand and I must say they have all been in pristine condition.
Update 12th September 2009
River fining off and easily wadeable once again. The 'Lady' is on the fin and making her presence known at every opportunity. That is not to say that the fishing is easy, but, to a well presented fly there is every chance of encountering her beauty. This was the case to day when between 11am and 3pm on a small section of river, my good friend, Welsh International Angler, Terry Morgan from Swansea, was let loose among them....on his newly invented ' Morgan's Parrot Fly', fished on a 10' 3 weight X Flite Rod, and a Double Taper Silk line. He had what could be termed as a 'Heinz' day, yes 57 Grayling and an additional 5 Brown Trout to total 62, truly exceptional sport, exceptional skill, exceptional Welsh Dee. Here is the stamp of most of the fish.
Update 23rd August 2009
River is up and down like a Yo-Yo at the moment through release water which is actually having a devastating effect on the fly hatches and hence the fishing in the Upper Dee. Andrew / Dave / Colin / Stephen, came for a day on the Grayling with Steve James the resident coach at Meadow Fishery, they were not disappointed they all managed fish, although it could have been better, here are some pics for you.
Update 15th August 2009
Well the Salmon are playing games with us on the Welsh Dee, I've never known a season like it for tweak and bump like takes and spitting the offering out, never the like of it before!! so today in and among some takes as described I set up a nymph infront of the Dry for David Jones.... and in a short spagce of time he has landed five fish, two brownies and three grayling, here is one of the Grayling.
Update 25th July 2009
Decided today to have a go at the Grayling with the 'Rat' under the float. These 'pics' are not great, taken with the mobile phone, but important in as much that I have caught the 51cm Grayling in the same pool, yet again, details of previous catches of this fish are onb the site. I know the fish because the maxilary bone is missing.... this time he has some sores too, possibly from spawning. Anyhow had three of it's brothers ? sisters ? cousins? too, all from the same pool and in almost successive casts.
Vic Kitchingham on holiday from Kent spent the day in the Upper Dee with me and in difficult bright conditions secured 11 fish on a 'Rat' infront of the dry. here are some pictures.
Here is what he had to say:
Hello Gwilym.
Just a quick note to thank you for a great day on the river last Friday. All the boxes were ticked very nicely, and I enjoyed your company and your guidance very much. I was obviously very pleased to have got my first grayling, and to have ended the day with one or two very respectable fish among our 12 or so bag for the day. I will quite definitely be back as soon as I am able.
What a lovely gesture, three brothers birthday gifted their 'Dad' to a day out on the upper Dee. Not to be outdone, they came along too. All had a great day, including 'Tom' who met with 'Jaws'... this is the fourth time in three years we have encountered him in the same area, each of the occasions is recorded and he started at 47cm and now is touching the measuring tape at 51cm.... a magical Grayling. Here are some pictures.
Tom with 'Jaws'
'Birthday Boy'
Dave and John with a nice Brownie and a Grayling
'Dom' fished hard on an awkward fishing day with blustery wind and was well rewarded
Here is what he had to say
You will be pleased to learn that this recalcitrant pupil having
under your guidance at last secured a couple of grayling at the end
of the day did rather better the following day and managed
another five grayling Including one that was 15 to 16 inches long. I
also lost another at my feet.
Certainly my roll casting began to be respectable and at long long
last I have begun to understand the art of "striking".
I hope I may repeat the experience with you.
East Sussex may be a long way from the Welsh Dee but my word it was
worth the journey. ( Your welcome Dominic, Gwilym )
