LLYN BRENIG FISHING REPORT WEEK ENDING 05.09.2010

The fishing at Brenig this week has gone well with a high number of fish being caught, although the weather has not been the best with a mixed week of heavy sun early on with windy and rainy evenings to end the week.

Despite this, the warmer weather over the past few weeks has brought some good dry fly sport with large hatches of heather fly and small brown sedges. These have without a doubt been the weeks best fly’s, including small beetles and muddler’s.

This week’s best bag goes to Mr Watson of Wrexham with 6fish for 13lb 1oz and the biggest fish of the week again goes to a Wirral Game member weighing 4lb exactly.

Anglers flies of the week still include boobies: Coral, Orange Stragglers, Woofta, Orange and Viva Boobies, Invicta’s, sedges and Heather fly’s.

Hotspots for the week include the Nantglyn bank and up Hafod Lom woods to the top of the quarry.

LLYN BRENIG FISHING REPORT WEEK ENDING 29TH AUGUST 2010

This week at Brenig we have had some difficult fishing conditions with strong winds at times and some heavy rain spells despite this, the fishing has not been affected with anglers coming off with some good bags of fish, keeping the rod average to 4 fish per angler.

Anglers at time have reported seeing lots of fish movement on the surface, but the fish being hard to catch due to the abundance of heather flies on the water and the fish being spoilt for choice. Best bag of the week went to Mr Farnworth of Crosby with six fish for 13lb 12oz and the biggest fish off the week went to a Wirral Game member weighing 3lb 12oz, both anglers caught their fish on bibio hoppers and Daddy Long legs.

Best flies of the week have been Heather Fly, Invicta, Muddlers, Segges, Bibios, Boobies – Woofta, Orange, Coral Straggle and black and green. Hotspots have been Tower Bay, Hafod Lom Woods, Nantglyn Bank and between VC and dam.

Upcoming Events:

Saturday 18th September – Moonwatch Explore the wonders of the solar system with an open telescope evening with local astronomy societies.

Sunday 19th September – Hiraethog Country Fair A full programme of events, activities, walks and rides.

LLYN BRENIG FISHING REPORT WEEK ENDING 22ND AUGUST 2010

This week Brenig hosted the Welsh Trials, organised by the Welsh Salmon and Trout Angling Association (WSTAA). This is the Loch style boat fishing event to determine who fished in next year’s welsh team at the Internationals.

Over one hundred anglers competed over two days, catching a total 331 fish, an average of 3fish per rod. Top rod on the first day went to Russell Owen from Llanidloes with 19fish for a total weight 29lb 1oz and in second place was Gareth Dixon from Maesnant with 15 fish for 24lb 6oz, this was a good result for these two anglers who fished in difficult very windy conditions.

On day two, Geoff Thomson from Llandysul was top rod with 13fish for 19lb 13oz with Gareth Jones from Merthyr being the runner up with 10fish for 17lb 6oz. Congratulations to these fine anglers! Most of the fish caught in the competition and during the week by non-competition anglers where caught in the bays along the west side of the lake. Bank anglers have also fared well in these bays and also in Tower Bay and along Visitor Centre shoreline. Despite torrential rain and strong winds throughout most of the week the weather has remained warm enough to encourage some fly hatch activity, in particular Heather Flies have been blown off the surrounding moorland and anglers have reported good sport on dry flies. Other patterns worth trying include Boobies, Dabblers, Minkeys and sedge patterns. This week will see another stocking of 1000 fish!

LLYN BRENIG FISHING REPORT WEEK ENDING 15.08.2010

This week at Llyn Brenig the fishing has still been good with even with the return of some northerly winds and at times a change to an easterly direction which can be the kiss of death for fishing in general but despite this, fish have been coming out all the same.

Top of the water sport is still looking good with lots of Brown Sedge seen throughout the week along with Daddy’s and Emerger Buzzers. Due to the changes in wind direction the fish have seemed to move round a little and anglers are finding more fish in the Sailing Club bay and along the Visitor Centre bank and in Tower Bay which have seemed a little quiet at times.

Last weekend we held the Welsh Ladies Trials which went very well with some good fish caught on the Sunday even though the sun was quite bright for most of the day, unfortunately at the time of writing this I do not have the results to hand but would like to thank those who took part and congratulations to those who made it through.

Hotspots for the week have been Hafod Lom Woods, Tower bay and between the Visitor Centre and the dam for the bank anglers with Barrow Island, Sailing Club Bay and across the face of the quarry for the boats. Top flies of the week have been the usual booby patterns such as Woofta, Orange Straggle, Tequila Booby, Dennis the Mennace and Viva, along with Heather Flies, Sedges, Bibio’s and Buzzers for those trout that like the finer food Brenig has to offer!

Best bag of the week went to Phil Wood and Brian Parry of Bala who’s combined bag weighed in at 12 fish for 29lb and also best fish went to Brian weighing in at 4lb 8oz all aught on Cats Booby and Bibio’s.

Tight lines for the week ahead and remember to book your boat in advance for this coming weekend to avoid disappointment as this weekend we host the welsh senior trials. Please dont forget to hand in your catch returns at the end of your day.

Llyn Brenig Fishing report week ending 8th August 2010

This week at Brenig we have seen some good fishing with reports from anglers of hard fighting fish with plenty of them caught on the surface. We have had mostly southerly winds this week which has made for some excellent conditions for fishing on the east shore for bank and boat anglers. At times there have been plenty of Daddy Long legs on the water along with sedges which has pleased a lot of anglers who enjoy top of the water sport. Booby flies and bushy lures are still working well with a lot of the more recent stockfish feeding on daphnia.

Best bag of the week went to Mr Storr-Barber of Rhuddlan with 6 fish for 16lb 4oz and his boat partner Mr Robinson of Llandudno with 6 fish for 13lb 8oz, all caught on Buzzers. Best fish of the week went to Lyndon Ford of Corwen, weighing 3lb 8oz and also a very respectable bag of 6fish for 14lb 2oz.

Best methods of the week have been floating lines with Daddy’s, Sedges, Lures, boobies and mini lures fished on fast glass lines. Hotspots of the week have been Hafod Lom woods up to the coves along Nantglyn Bank and ring of stones, around Barrow Island and Sailing Club Bay. Many thanks for returning your catch returns this week which has seen the Rod average increase to 4.2fish per angler.

LLYN BRENIG FISHING REPORT WEEK ENDING 1ST AUGUST 2010

This week at Brenig we have had some good fishing conditions with light breezes and over cast skies encouraging the fish to come up in the water. With a stocking of 100 fish last Monday we have had some good results this week with anglers coming to practice for the Ty Nant Classic competitions. Saturday was the main practice day for the anglers along with some novice anglers getting out on the water as well. The competition got underway on Sunday with anglers competing from the home nations and good to see Moc Morgan here to show them how it was done! 1st prize went to Mike Egan of Wales with a bag of 4 fish plus time bonus giving him a bag weight of 13lb 8oz, closely followed by Tom Wilson of Scotland with 4fish + time bonus at 13lb 5oz and 3rd prize going to Bill Patrick also of Scotland weighing his bag in at 13lb 4oz. With a good turnout of lady anglers, i am please to say that the prize for best lady angler went to Enid Edwards with a bag weighing 8lb 7oz and largest fish going to another Welshman Wayne White weighing 4lb 4oz. With a total of 89 anglers, the rod average has slipped a little on last week but still a respectable 3.43 fish per angler averaging 1lb 10oz per fish.

I am pleased to say a good day had by all with the anglers commenting on the excellent quality of fish and the only complaint was that they couldn’t land them quick enough.

Many thanks to all involved with the competition and we look forward to seeing you all in the near future.

Non competition anglers also had a good week at Brenig with the majority of the fish coming out on the Nantglyn Bank, Hafod Lom and Tower Bay. The only downfall with calculating catch returns for non competing anglers is that they’re not handing them in, so we are just going by word of mouth. Please remember if you want information about fishing that we do need your catch returns in.

Top flies of the week have been: Woofta, Dennis the Menace, Viva, Coral, Peaches and Cream booby. Bibio’s, daddy long legs and sedges along with the faithfull Heather fly.

Llyn Brenig Fishing Report week ending 11.07.2010

This week at Brenig we have had mixed weather again but has provided some excellent fishing conditions for anglers, if you could put up with a bit of breeze! This breeze has created some good wind lanes in the water with fish at times seen picking off sedges and small black flies on the surface.

This last weekend saw the Anglian Water competition with all anglers having a good days fishing with 204 fish caught giving a rod average of 4.86 fish per angler. I am very proud to report our Welsh Hawks team went home with 1st prize with a bag of 33 fish weighing in at 65lb 15 5/8 oz closely followed by Prince Albert with 32 fish weighing 65lb 1/8oz and Llanilar Ty Nant with 31 fish weighing 61lb 3 ½ oz. Best fish of the competition went to Arthur Charles of Adail Ty Nant weighing in at 2lb 10oz and Best Bag went to Hugh Beynon of Wye Knotts weighing in at 15lb 6 ½ oz. Many thanks to all the teams and good luck for your future competitions.

For our Non competition anglers the week has also been pretty good with the rod average increasing to 3.9 fish per angler, giving us more smiling faces  and less ear ache and even one of our regulars Ned Thomas (aka Friar Tuk) saying “his days fishing was EXCELLENT” Result! Hotspots this week have been the East Shore, Tower Bay all the way to the ring of stones for boats and bank Anglers but not to dismiss the bank from the Visitor Centre to the Dam and around the boats.

Top flies of the week have been the usual Boobies (various colours), various sedge patterns subsurface and on the top with small Bibio and dabblers on the dropper.

We are now Trialing a “Late Boat” which goes from 6pm – Dusk at £8. Please bring correct money for the late boat as the shop closes at 4pm.

LLYN BRENIG FISHING REPORT WEEK ENDING 04.07.2010

This week at Brenig has seen some difficult fishing conditions again at times with some un-fishable winds blowing from the south gusting up to 60mph causing us to cancel all boat fishing last Sunday.

These conditions have given a disappointing Rod Average again of 2.85 fish per angler, this was based on the handful of catch returns handed in, which is not helping us to collect the necessary information we need to assess stock levels in the reservoir. (so please take a minute to fill one in and place it in one of the boxes provided or email or telephone your returns in to dona.davies@dwrcymru.com or 01490420463. Boxes can be found at the exit poi8nts of the Visitor Centre, fisherman’s car park, North End, East shore and Tower Bay.

Fish have been found this week throughout the reservoir with no particular hotspot standing out, but flies of the week have been various boobies, Bibio’s and sedges on the top.

Llyn Brenig Fishing Report week ending 20.06.2010

This week has seen some difficult conditions here at Brenig with northerly winds and bright sunshine, bringing the rod average to 3.5 fish per angler. The water temperature is still around 9°c.

Llanilar AA and Aberaeron anglers have had their club competitions this weekend with the best bag for Llanilar going to Tony Bevan with 6fish for 9lb and the best bag for Aberaeron going to Geoff Churton also weighing 9lb for 6fish.

Top flies of the week have been the usual Booby patterns fish on a DI3 lines with blobs and Hummungus fished Intermediate has also worked well as well as small gold heads and buzzers, but the booby and blob patterns coming out on top due to the fish deeding a lot on the daphnia. This week we have also had reports of some good few pike coming out with the report of a few very large specimens snapping leaders! There have been large shoals of perch feeding on the west banks with some fish over 1lb in weight seen in front of the Visitor Centre chasing fry.

Bank and Boat hotspots this week have been between the Visitor Centre and the Dam, east shore from the ring of stones all the way down to Tower Bay.

Llyn Brenig Fishing Report Week ending 13/06/10

LLYN BRENIG FISHING REPORT WEEK ENDING 6th June 2010

Some unusual hot weather this week at Brenig. This you would have thought made the fish disappear, but no there have been plenty to see. It’s been catching them seems to be the problem.

Water temperature is still about the same as previously staying at about 8 to 9 degrees. The rod average is 3.8.

The heaviest fish this week goes to Mr Pete Haveland from Penmachno with a rainbow of 4.2oz on a Haul a Gwynt, well done.

The best bag of the week goes to an old stalwart of Brenig Mr Mike Wellman of Cheshire with a bag weight of 14lbs all caught on a black and green booby, on a boat .

Hafod Lom is still one of the hot spots especially of the boat with Tower bay not far behind. With this hot weather a few daddy long legs are appearing and really good news the Big Red Sedge has made a comeback up the Brenig Arm, so go get them lads.

Other good patterns are Diawl Bach, Dunkeld, and of course the ever useful Viva and Booby’s. Fishing Tale, from a reliable source. Up by Barrow island fisherman nearly landed a 8lb+ Brown Trout so they are there, unless I am getting my p------ pulled.

LLYN BRENIG FISHING REPORT WEEK ENDING 31.05.2010

This last week has seen some mixed weather at Brenig with changeable wind directions, mostly northerly and southerly winds. But despite this, the fishing has been very good and water Temperature has stayed at 9°.

Enjoy the scenery and Tight Lines.

Top flies of the week have been buzzers, diawl bach’s, black lures, goldhead’s and Black, Orange, Woofta, Peaches & Cream Boobies

LLYN BRENIG FISHING REPORT WEEK ENDING 16TH MAY 2010

This week has seen an improvement in fishing at Brenig with anglers enjoying a rod average of 4.5 fish per rod. This is largely down to the continued weekly stocking and better weather conditions.

A slight increase in temperature has seen trout feeding on top of the water, in fact there has even been reports of Sedge and Mayfly on the water.

The most popular flies have once again been various types of Boobies and Blobs. Other flies worth trying include Black Muddler, Damsel, Olive Fritz, Black Gnat and various Buzzers.

Bank anglers have fared well along the Nantglyn Bank, Duck Island, Watersports Bay and the shoreline between visitor centre and dam with boat anglers doing best along Hafod Lom, Duck Island and near the dam and cages.

This week will see an additional stocking of 2000 x 1lb-11/2lb fish. Fish farm staff have also been netting some of the cages, naturally grown on fish that lurk underneath the cage system and stocking them in various parts of the reservoir. These fish are truly impressive perfect specimens – the largest a 17 lb was released near Duck Island with a few other 5-6lb fish spread out across the lake.

If any anglers do catch one of these large Rainbows, do let the Rangers know as we would like to take some photos. Thank you and good luck!

LLYN BRENIG FISHING REPORT WEEK ENDING 09.05.2010

Cold northerly winds have made fishing difficult this week with a mixture of sun and showers with the water temperature at just under 8°. The fish have been higher up in the water and a few fishing coming to the surface feeding on emerging flies. The first sign of mayflies and sedges have been seen this week.

Best Bag of the week went to D Harrison of Hawarden with 6fish for 12 1/2 lb and the biggest fish of 4ln going to P Haveland of Penmachno.

Bank Hotspots have been Visitor Centre to the Dam, Watersport’s Bay along with the Ring of Stones. Boat Hotspots have been in front of the Visitor Centre, Tower Bay and the Quarry.

Top Flies of the week are still the infamous Booby patterns, Diawl Bach and Viva’s.

The rod average has stayed around 2.3 per angler, but is set to improve along with the weather.

Llyn Brenig Fishing Report Week Ending 02/05/10

The weather showed signs of warming up this week with the wind blowing from the south for a spell and anglers enjoyed some warm sunshine during the early part of the week. This brought about some buzzer hatches and anglers have been reporting a bit more surface activity. Unfortunately this was short lived and by the weekend another cold front from the north returned.

As for the fishing, it has been quite hard going with anglers having to work really hard for any sport. This has been reflected in the catch returns with a disappointing rod average of just two fish per rod and an average weight of one pound and a half.

The secret for finding fish at this time of year is to be as mobile as possible and fish fairly deep using early season lures. Anglers should remember that following one of the hardest and longest winters for a long time, the water temperature is colder than average for April/May and fish are lying very deep.

Best areas for the week have been sailing club, tower bay, Hafod Lom and the shoreline between the Visitor centre and the dam. This week will see a further stocking of 1,000 fish.

Anglers interested in wildlife will be pleased to hear that one of the rangers reported a sighting of an otter swimming in the lake this week, and on Thursday the cuckoo was heard, perhaps warmer weather is on the way!!

LLYN BRENIG FISHING REPORT WEEK ENDING 25TH APRIL 2010

The sun has been out again all week with the odd drizzle on Sunday, but with a strong wind blowing in a northerly direction until Wednesday. This wind bought high pressure with it, nice weather although the air was cold. On Thursday the wind directions changed and the temperature rose with an average temperature of 8°.

Heaviest bag of the week went to three Wirral Game anglers with the largest being 6 fish for 14lb. Biggest fish went to Gerallt Hughes of Llangadfan weighting in at 3lb 4oz. This week’s Hotspots have been Tower Bay, Brenig Arm, Sailing Club Bay, Nantglyn Bank and the Llech Daniel Coves. Top flies of the week have been Orange, Orange & White, Woofta, Dennis the Menace boobies, Cats Whisker. When the weather has been suitable, fish have been coming up to take Buzzers on the surface.

Please don’t forget to leave your top flies, hotspots and comments in the Shop Comments Book.

Llyn Brenig Fishing Report Week ending 18th April 2010

Llyn Brenig Fishing Report Week Ending 04/04/10

With a mixed bag of weather this week, from warm overcast wet weather beginning of the week to blizzard conditions on Wednesday, with the snow hanging around until Friday and high winds over the weekend has seen the fishing drop of a bit. The rod average has dropped to 3 fish per angler. The water temperature has stayed the same and is still at 3°C.

They caught them on a selection of gold heads, fritz, goldhead buzzers and Cats Whiskers. Mr R Storr-Barber from Rhuddlan also had a good day and went home with 6 fish for 15lb.

The bank hotspots this week have been between the Dam and Visitor Centre, Brenig Arm and along Nantglyn Bank when the weather has not been to windy. Sinking lines fished with various coloured boobies and lures is still producing the best results. The Boat hotspots have been Sailing Club Bay and Hafod Lom Woods.

The top flies of the week have been cats whiskers, various boobies, goldhead’s, vivas and various lures.

Llyn Brenig Fishing Report week ending 28.03.10

Following the success of opening weekend excellent fishing has continued this week. The rod average has increased to 4.7 fish per angler with the vast majority of fish over 2lb. Llyn Brenig Fishing Report 2010 Open Weekend

Week Ending 21.03.2010

Saturday was the first day of the 2010 season and proved to be a big success with most anglers catching fish. The weather was cold with a gusty northerly wind which was difficult at times. The lake temperature is currently at 2.5°c and rising (thankfully) after we had a cold winter which took the lake down to 0.5c for a long period.

The rod average for the weekend was 4.4 fish per angler. Mr Brian Lomas from Whiston had the best bag of the weekend with 6 fish for 27lb. He had a 10lb 3oz fish and a 4lb 3oz to help his bag limit. Mr R G from Llanrwst had 6 fish for 14lb and caught them on boobies, Orange Fritz and Black and Gold. Mr Thomas from Rhyl also had 6 fish for 14lb 7oz. Mr P Gregson from Henrhyd had a good day fishing with his son with the 8 year old beating his dad for best bag, he caught 4 fish for 10lb 2oz all on booby which made his day.

The Bank hotspots were Sailing Club Bay, Visitor Centre to the Dam Wall and Brenig Arm which gave a bit of shelter. The best methods were sinking lines with Di5 – Di7 with Cats Whisker booby on the point and orange blob on the dropper. Various lures were doing the trick with Black and Green Goldheads catching a few also. Boat anglers also did well in sailing club bay and the Brenig Arm. The best flies of the weekend were Cats whisker, Orange Fritz, Goldhead’s, Blobs, Tequila Booby and various colours of boobies and lures. Good luck for the rest of the season.
